Peter McElroy and his younger sister Una, run their family farm in Ireland but are heavily in debit and are threatened by the bank with being sold up. Peter is anxious to let the farm go and move to England where he can earn a proper wage, and when the village schoolmaster asks Una to marry him; Peter sees the opportunity. Their siblings Frances, who is crippled from fighting in the Spanish Civil War, and Catherine are however refuse to allow the farm to be sold.
